Lokta PaperLokta paper is handmade in the mountains of Nepal from the inner bark of the lokta bush. Lokta is one of the strongest paper fibers, and since new growth regenerates quickly it provides a renewable resource for the artisans who depend on the fragile ecosystem of Nepal for their livelihoods.

The paper made from this plant is exceptionally durable, resistant to decay, free of acid and is ideal for archival storage. Lokta paper is available in vibrant colors and varied textures.

Making of Lokta Paper
  • Dried bark is cooked in ash solution.
  • The bark is cut into small pieces.
  • It is then cooked and rinsed again.
  • The fibers are then crushed on a large flat rock.
  • Make a fine paste of fibers by mixing it with water.
  • The mixture is poured onto a surface of a screen that is half immersed in water.
  • The mould is gently shaken to even out the pulp.
  • Leave it to dry and let the water evaporate completely.
  • The fine sheet of lokta paper is formed.
