Quilts are a warm bed coverings designed with
soft padding enclosed between layers of fabric created by lines of
decorative stitching. The quilts manufactured in India are not just the
pieces of excellent craftsmanship but also pieces of history with
stories to be documented and preserved. Designing of quilts is a
skillful activity that offers a unique combination of experience and
traditional values and interest.

Indian quilts are usually handmade articles. The tools used for making
the quilts vary in design, size, weight and workmanship from weaver to
weaver. The designs are very attractive, with various floral, geometric,
paisley patterns in colorful backgrounds. Sometimes the borders have
interesting geometrical patterns in vibrant colors.
Very often, while designing the quilts, the master weaver recites the
pattern, that he has committed to memory. The weave is in single knots,
in a manner that creates the illusion of doubling the knots. The
variations in a hand-woven quilt make it exciting, as against the
persistent similarity of the machine product.

Embossed
designs are made in single pastel colors. The floral embossed work is
available in many soft colors like pinks, pale blues, sea greens, beige
and ivory.
They are adorned with embroidery, applique, patchwork and distinct
flawless finishing that adds to their aesthetic look. They are the
result of meticulous cutting, arrangement and hand-piecing with the
painstaking needlecraft of yesteryears. Rich fabrics such as silk,
cotton, satin etc may be used to make quilts. Polyfill, feather and
surgical cotton are usually used as filling materials.
