The altar or the home temple is the most sacred
area of the home. The shape of the mandir is similar to the general
structure of the temples with a conical roof. The size may vary as per
the individual requirements like space and purpose etc. They may be
about 10" tall to almost 6".
They may be crafted out of marble, acrylic or wood. These altars
designed like mini-temples apart form the religious element also lend a
decorative element to the home. Thy may have a decorative metal sheet
covering or be elaborately carved
The marble temples are often carved and inlayed. They may even have
intricate jali work. The wooden ones may be painted in aupecious colors
and symbols or carved, inlayed and over-layed with mirrors and metal
pieces in intricate patterns. The metal finishes can be given by giving
the top layer of metal sheets. White metal, oxidized silver and brass or
copper finishes can be attained.
