There are over 600 species of helichrysum occuring worldwide with 245 found in Southern Africa. The word Helichrysum is derived from the Greek "helios" meaning sun and "chrysos" meaning gold, referring to many of the flowers of species in this genus. The most commonly used species of helichrysum are:

Cultivation of Helichrysums
This is an easy to grow plant requiring very little maintenance. They are planted in full sun and well-drained soil. They can be raised from seed, various species may be propagated by cuttings, inserted in spring. To shape or encourage new growth, the plant can be pruned lightly after flowering.

Drying of Helichrysum
Flowers for drying should be collected when partially unfolded and suspended. These are collected and tied together. They should be then placed with their heads downwards in a cool place until they dry. After drying take them and store them in air tight containers.

Uses of Helichrysum
Dried helichrysums are used mainly for dried and exotic arrangements. The colorful medley of these flowers is great for everlasting dried flowers. This dazzler radiate colors all over the place giving a shine to the place. They also have food, ornamental and medicinal value. The dried leaves are used to make an ointment to be applied on the body.
