What are Wind Chimes?
Wind chimes are basically a bunch of sound
producing items (most often cylinders) suspended on a binding thread. These
cylinders then produce a melodious sound when waved gently by the natural
wind. Invented by the Chinese, wind chimes hold a special significance in
Feng-Shui. The sounds produced by wind chimes, are said to transpire peace,
serenity and tranquility in the surrounding environment. Besides, as
decorative embellishments, the hanging bells and chimes are precisely the
right choice to offer a festive look to the decor.
Portraying the splendid artwork by the Indian craftsmen, the exquisitely
painted hanging bells and chimes offer just the right ways of celebration
and festivities. The delightful decoration brought to the ambiance by these
colorfully patterned papier- mache hanging bells and metal chimes placed at
deserving corners with silken threads add to the joy and augment the spirit
of festivity. The chimes are a pleasure to behold and soothing music to
ears. The red tassel hanging at the ends of the chimes are indeed
eye-catchers.

How to Make Wind Chimes
Generally, a wind chime consists of four
main parts. The top portion is called the platform and is made up of metal
or wood. All the chimes or tubes are then suspended on a thread in a
particular fashion (circular or diagonal). Lastly, there is a clapper or
striker made up of wood or rubber ball which is made to suspend in the
middle of the chimes. When wind blows, all the chimes move and strike to the
clapper producing soft sounds. These are easy to make and hence can be made
at home too. Handmade wind chimes make wonderful personalized gift items.
Hanging bells can be of varied types but the basic idea of making it
remains the same as described above. Since these hanging bells or chimes
were invented on the feng shui parameters, these are also known as feng shui
wind chimes.
Wind Chime Sounds
Wind chime sounds vary as per the material used
in the making of chimes or bells. An aluminum wind chime would produce a
tinkling sound while a wooden wind chime would rather produce a deeper
sound. Though, the main motive of every bell chime remains that it produces
sweet and soothing sounds. A wind chime making shrill sound is absolutely
useless. Thus, when it comes to sound production in wind chimes, it largely
depends on the material being used in the making of chimes and bells.
