Care of Antiques

An antique is not only a prized and valuable possession but also an object that is reminiscent of the bygone era. Restoration and maintenance of these valuables is of utmost importance and there are certain basic things, which all must consider for all collectibles irrespective of the material they are made of, be it paper, metal, glass, ceramic or wood.
  • Keep antiques away from harsh lights, especially those objects made from organic materials such as wood, paper or textile as it can lead to fading of the colours and speeds up chemical reactions that would otherwise occur naturally over a period of time.
  • An optimum balance of humidity is essential for maintenance of antique objects. Paintings, wood and paper can shrink, become brittle and crack in absence of humidity.
  • Extreme temperatures should be avoided, especially in case of organic materials; antique collectibles should be stored in that part of the house, building which is cooler than the other areas.
  • Excessive handling of antiques should be avoided, this is so, because oil residue on skin can remain on the items, causing them to deteriorate. Wearing cotton gloves while handling antiques and other fragile items is a must.
  • Use clean and soft bristle brushes, cotton balls, moisture free compressed air and distilled water for cleaning antiques.
