Though chain mails evolved some where around 2nd
century B.C. by the Romans, it became very popular in the Medieval Era.
It remained in demand till the 15th century when plate armor evolved. It
was made by interlocking the iron rings to form a mesh. Chain mails
remained the most preferred armor for the longest time. Good chain mail
makers were in high demand and were treated like honored craftsmen.

Known
by names like maille or chain maille, chain mail was more flexible and
comfortable than the earlier armors. It evolved as a protection to the
war weapons evolving in the era and provide better maneuverability for
the warrior. They were worn with a belt which used to divide the weight
of the mail between the shoulder and the waist. These had to be worn
over a cloth or leather padding as a protection from the pointed weapons
and cold.
The medieval era is known for its elaborate mail armors and artistic
shields. These armors are now made with a purpose of recapturing that
glorious era. They are used for re-enactment of the era, decoratives for
public places and historical monuments and museums and collectors. They
are till date hand made by the craftsmen.
Significance
A functional armor, chain mails have always been used as an effective
means of shielding oneself. Well crafted, these mails were donned by
herculean warriors. Often made up of metal plate and mail armor, they
were the first medieval armor ever developed. These were only worn with
padded and protective clothes which protected the body from varied
weather extremities. Used for protecting the entire body against sharp
edged weapons, these mails were characterized with elaborate designs &
brilliant colors. Once considered as a fashion statement, it still
radiates the same raw strength & speaks a lot about the powerful
lifestyle of the knights. Well-made chain mail was a prized possession
of fighting knights. But they are still seen as wonderful antique
possession & these chain mails are quite comfortable & light
weight in nature.
